AUSTRALIAN OPEN OTT INTERFACE

2014

Context & Problem

Context

  • Australian Open OTT (DIRECTV Sports App), 2014 — consumer-facing experience on set-top box.

  • Needed to showcase live tennis matches, interactive ads, scores, player bios, and recording options without breaking immersion.

Problem

  • Legacy sports app was outdated, hard to navigate, and lacked modern interaction patterns.

  • Goal: deliver a live-streaming + interactive experience that could scale to other sports (soccer, football, etc.), while keeping engagement seamless.

Solution & Process

Solution

  • Designed a side-by-side live video + scoreboard interface for continuous match viewing.

  • Added interactive highlight panels, live social snippets, and player bios to deepen engagement.

Process

  • Partnered with product managers, engineers, and UX researchers under an agile process.

  • Validated navigation and interface patterns through A/B testing with researchers.

  • Built features such as:

    • Live Scoreboard with serving indicators and instant updates.

    • Match Detail pages with “Watch Now,” “Record Match,” and Player Bio options.

    • Navigation (menu, highlight panels) tailored for set-top box UI.

Results

  • Delivered a consumer-facing live-streaming + interactive experience/live ads that set the foundation for DIRECTV’s sports OTT apps.

  • Project generated $2M in revenue.

  • Increased user engagement with continuous browsing of live scores, match details, and player profiles during playback.

  • Provided a scalable design framework later extended to soccer, football, and other sports.
